OCIA stands for the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults. It is the process through which adults become members of the Catholic Church. This consists of steps, periods and rites that make up the model of the Christian Initiation as restored in the second Vatican Council.
OCIA is open to anyone interested in becoming Catholic. You are welcome if you are/were:
Brand new to the faith and want to learn more
Baptized in another faith
Baptized Catholic Church but did not receive the other sacraments
Baptized Catholic Church but did not receive further catechesis
A parishioner of SIJ and want to learn more about our faith
If you have never been baptized, the first steps to becoming Catholic are getting to know Jesus, Christianity, the Catholic Church, and how Christians live. These are important first steps so you know if this is something you would like to pursue. This discovery process is open ended, and gives you space to come to know Jesus and His Church before you decide if this is a good fit for you.
Sessions to prepare for initiation into the Catholic Church and for full Communion typically start in September. The 2024-2025 session of OCIA begins September 16th and ends June 2nd. The group meets every Monday evening at 7pm in the Sacred Heart room.
All are invited to participate! Whether you are interested in information about joining the Catholic Church or are already Catholic and want to grow in your faith and journey with those who may join our faith, you are welcome!
